Take Me Outside for Learning

Congratulations to Mrs. MacInnis for winning the Take Me Outside School Challenge!

Vermiculture at Salmo Elementary

We have set up our first worm composter in Ms Shamim and Mr Grays room.

We seeded it with 1.5 pounds of worms.

Prior experience tells Mr. Dando that this bin will be operating to full capacity within two weeks to a month. It will absorb all class based compost and also all paper used in the class(shredded).

It will need to be reset in about a month to half the population as they breed quickly. From this we will be able to set up another fully operating bin for another class.

Habitats

Habitats abound these days at Salmo Elementary!

Not only have two hamsters taken up residence, but students have been learning about the lifecycles of fish, crickets, and worms.

There are lots of jobs to keep students busy as they learn and track their grwoth!

Hand Crafts and building skills

Students in Mr. Yule's class have been learning the fine art of wood carving and sculpturing. They have been using fine skills to make bird sculptures with paper templates and papier mache.

Wood carving tools have been introduced and students have been sawing, planing, wood burning, and sanding as they work on their creations.

Mr. Grey's class also learned about simple machines by building moveable spiders!

Remembrance Day

Many thanks to Mr. Yule's class for preparing a thoughtful Remembrance Day online ceremony.

Ms. Berk's class read the poem "Poppy, Poppy".

Mr. Yule's class presented this original song, written by Mr. Yule himself.

IF I COULD END THE WAR

If I could end the war

There’d be no fighting anymore

We’d find a better way to solve our problems

Across the whole world wide

We’d set our differences aside

Halloween for Hunger Haul

Congratulations to Salmo Elementary and Salmo Secondary School for raising 1501.5 pounds of food for the Salmo Community Resource Food Bank!

What a wonderful way to give back to the community. Many thanks to our neighbours for their generous contributions.

Wildsight Adventures

We are so thrilled to be one of the classes chosen to take a journey with Wildsight’s Through the Seasons mentorship program this year.  Students were excited to meet Fairywinkle, as she met with us for first of four half-day field trips.  She inspired awe and excitement in the students as she shared a story, sent them on a colour hunt with magnifying glasses, shared with them the chick-a-dee call, and provided opportunity for each one to find a tree friend (sit spots) for students to return to as the seasons change.  We were able to take a moment at our sit

Artwork Abounds!

Salmo Elementary students have been busy throughout the school highlighting their artwork!

Metis Awareness Month

It's been a learning journey for students during Metis Awareness Month so far at SES! The intermediate classes learned a lot about Louis Riel, the uses of the sash, modern jigging and many other aspects of the rich Metis culture. We even sampled some bannock! We read lots of Metis storybooks and used Leah Dorion's book, The Giving Tree to explore the 12 Red River Cart Metis teachings and made a giant Red River cart wheel full of art and connections.

Halloween fun!

Halloween fun was had by all on October 30!

Staff and students dressed up to celebrate. We had a story walk (The 13 nights of Halloween) at the front of the school for classes and community members to enjoy. All classes participated in the Halloween for Hunger food drive. And we ended the morning wiht a hot dog lunch!

Great way to celebrate, Salmo Elementary!
