News Stories

Our makerspace activities continue this year! Tools and projects have been taken into classrooms for direct classroom instruction. Additionally, our lunch time makerspace club has begun, and students are able to work on their projects over the break. There are lots of fun things being built in this space!

Mr. Caulford's class has been doing a literacy unit on Mr. Man stories. They have learned about the characteristics of the Mr. Men and all the components of good story writing. They know that a story needs characters, a plot, a problem and a solution. 

Students are now putting their skills to work by putting on shadow puppet plays.

Ms. Berk and Mrs. MacInnis' class have been busy with literacy!

Every morning there are stories to share, games to play, and writing to practice. Students rotate through centres to practice their skills with our support team. They are making great progress!

Many thanks to Mr. Yule's class for preparing a thoughtful Remembrance Day online ceremony. 

Ms. Berk's class read the poem "Poppy, Poppy".

IF I COULD END THE WAR

If I could end the war

Students in Mr. Yule's class have been learning the fine art of wood carving and sculpturing. They have been using fine skills to make bird sculptures with paper templates and papier mache.

Wood carving tools have been introduced and students have been sawing, planing, wood burning, and sanding as they work on their creations. 

Habitats abound these days at Salmo Elementary!

Not only have two hamsters taken up residence, but students have been learning about the lifecycles of fish, crickets, and worms. 

There are lots of jobs to keep students busy as they learn and track their grwoth!

We have set up our first worm composter in Ms Shamim and Mr Grays room.

We seeded it with 1.5 pounds of worms.

Prior experience tells Mr. Dando that this bin will be operating to full capacity within two weeks to a month. It will absorb all class based compost and also all paper used in the class(shredded).

We are so thrilled to be one of the classes chosen to take a journey with Wildsight’s Through the Seasons mentorship program this year.  Students were excited to meet Fairywinkle, as she met with us for first of four half-day field trips.  She inspired awe and excitement in the students as she shared a story, sent them on a colour hunt with magnifying glasses, shared

Congratulations to Salmo Elementary and Salmo Secondary School for raising 1501.5 pounds of food for the Salmo Community Resource Food Bank!
