Salmo Elementary News - February 2025 Recap

Readathon
Salmo Elementary is in the middle of the readathon and students are exceeding expectations. First target was 40,000 minutes and students made 57,740 minutes. The overall goal is 120,000 minutes.
Students are recording their minutes. The goal is 1000 minutes per student intermediate, and 500 minutes per student primary.
Some students have achieved their personal goal already and were presented with the snow making ski medal. The first incentive was crazy hair and twin day, and we had most students participating.
Our reading group intervention teams are working hard including volunteer CBAL readers to IST and principal taking small intensive reading groups for short periods of time almost daily. The student buddy program also promotes and exposes students to reading opportunities.
Valentine's Dance
The PAC put on a school wide Valentines dance last Friday which was well attended.
Winter Sports
Intermediate classes have been able to take advantage of the ski hill for the past month, other classes have been cross country skiing, skating, and the curling lessons have been completed with a number (approximately 12) joining the junior curling program.
Student and Family Surveys
Students have now completed the Middle Years Development Instrument (used to gain a deeper understanding of children’s social and emotional health, well-being and assets during middle childhood - from their own perspective) and the Student Learning Survey (an annual survey of students in grades 4, 7, 10 and 12, their parents and school staff regarding school experiences, and administered since 2002 in British Columbia public schools).
Results from those surveys will be reported on in the year that follows. Regarding literacy and numeracy, while we don't have all the results in yet, we are optimistic about the improvements all around!
