Foundation Skills Assessments and Improving Literacy and Numeracy

In October, students in grades 4 and 7 completed the Foundations Skills Assessments (FSAs). The FSAs assess core literacy (reading/writing) and numeracy (math) skills to provide insights for parents, teachers, and the education system.

Students are working to improve skills in multi-step math problems, and build a confident attitude toward solving diverse problems and reviewing their answers. Students were more confident in their literacy work on the FSAs, and providing the students with cookies certainly helped them to focus!

Teachers and all staff at Salmo Elementary are supporting improved numeracy and continuing improvement in literacy through a school focus on building ownership of the school growth plan. This is a plan that seeing educators take charge of structures and strategies to improve student skills, including numeracy proficiency, for all learners from kindergarten through grade 6 and in some cases, beyond to grade 8.

Physical Literacy and Social Literacy

Volleyball students have been very active and did a tour to Creston where they were graciously hosted by the students and staff there and played both Canyon-Lister Elementary School and Erickson Elementary School.

Our late-October Halloween for Hunger drive collected over 15,000 lbs of food for the foodbank! This will serve families well for the fall months.

Students and staff are now preparing to head into winter break with the last day of classes on Friday, December 19. The winter concert is happening December 18 from 7-8 p.m. and many holiday happenings have already begun with students celebrating kindness, generosity and the wonder that is winter in the Kootenays.
