March Newsletter
It was a happy March,
|
We organized a Secwepemc jingle and fancy dancer to come to Salmo Elementary in order to share their knowledge. Janelle is a proud Secwépemc (Shuswap) woman from T’exelc (Williams Lake Indian Band). Her father is former chief Willie Alphonse Jr, and her mother is Cree from Horse Lake. She has been dancing fancy shawl and jingle dress since she was 2 years old and was named the First Nations Role Model for School District #27. Janelle also sings on the hand drum, teaches basic pow wow dancing, does indigenous crafts, and Shuswap storytelling. She follows the pow wow trail across all of BC and down into the USA in the summer and visits family for traditional ways of life in the fall. “Being able to share culture and dance has always been very important to me, especially to our younger generation.” |

Their unwavering spirit and enthusiasm infuse every corner of our halls with warmth and excitement, reminding us that together, we can weather any storm and bask in the joy of learning and growing together.

Renovations have begun:
|
Our school is undergoing a remarkable transformation with extensive renovations across multiple spaces. From the serene ambiance of our library to the enchanting atmosphere of the Star room and the comforting haven of the sensory room, new flooring is being installed to enhance these environments. Additionally, the installation of a new dishwasher sanitizer promises improved hygiene standards, ensuring the health and safety of our students and staff. With the introduction of a new primary toilet, convenience and accessibility are prioritized, while a fresh coat of paint in the gym heralds the beginning of its revitalization journey. A heartfelt thank you extends to the dedicated contractors and tradespeople whose hard work and expertise are elevating our school to new heights.

The arrival of the new sanitizer / dishwasher, supported by the district for our upgrade, has been long-awaited since its order back in August. Despite the wait, its presence now brings immense relief and gratitude. We're eager to utilize this essential addition to our facilities, ensuring enhanced cleanliness and safety for everyone in our school community. |

We are immensely grateful for the unwavering dedication of our staff and the commitment of our hot lunch provider (PAC) in assisting the school community on our journey to enhance food security. In a world where access to nutritious meals is not always guaranteed, your collective efforts play a pivotal role in ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive both academically and physically.
